South Africa and Lesotho July 2017, January and July 2018 8 PERSON MAXIMUM
The Drakensberg, or Maluti, as the Basotho people know them, Mountains are situated in the middle of South Africa. These mountains were once the home of the indigenous San people, who left their mark in the form of centuries old rock art in the region's myriad caves before being displaced by their neighbors to the north. Nowadays the Zulu inhabit the South African side of the border while the Basotho have populated the Lesotho side. The Kingdom of Lesotho is recognized as having the highest low spot of any country in the world, so it can claim the title of the world's highest nation!
We will travel from Durban to the border with Lesotho, at Sani Pass, a tourist destination in its own right. From there we will take a Land Cruiser into Lesotho and rent horses, travelling with a local guide for three to five days through the otherworldly landscape of the Lesotho highlands, staying at homestays with local families as we go.
Once back in South Africa we will travel along the Drakensberg, seeing the impressive reach of the mountains from the South African side, and learning about the history and customs of the San people through their remaining rock art.
We'll top off the trip with a stay at a game reserve in Kwa-Zulu Natal, which is a departure from the idea of "roughing it" but well worth it! Over three days at the game park we'll hope to catch glimpses of a full complement of Africa's Big Five, the elephant, cape buffalo, lion, black rhino, and leopard. Even if one or two of these remain too elusive to spot, there's plenty of other game about to observe!
After the game park we'll head back to Durban where you can opt to stay a bit longer or head straight home.
If the standard trip isn't enough of South Africa or Lesotho for you, let us know! We can also hike or ride longer in the mountains, spend more time in the game reserve, go ice climbing in July if there's ice, or explore more of what southern Africa has to offer. Just ask!
